Persian/ Iranian film industry is one of the most unique and artistically creative in the world, with a distinct focus on producing artistic and thought-provoking movies unlike the mega-blockbuster action movies in American cinema, though such films do exist in Iran. In the 1990s, Iran was lauded as one of the best exporters of cinema. Some critics now rank Iran as the world's most important national cinema exporter. Because of their creative and convention-defying style as well as their underlying universal themes, Iranian art films have garnered international fame and now enjoy a global following with a flurry of international awards and recognitions coming in the last twenty years.
